Boar’s Head Investigation After Listeria Outbreak

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced an investigation into Boar’s Head processing plants nationwide following a deadly listeria outbreak linked to the company’s deli meats. This outbreak has resulted in 59 hospitalizations and 10 deaths, traced back to a now-closed plant in Virginia.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is leading the investigation, focusing on public health and corporate accountability. The Virginia plant had multiple violations, including mold and insects, as revealed by a Freedom of Information Act request.

Records from other Boar’s Head plants in Michigan, Arkansas, and Indiana are being withheld due to the ongoing investigation. A letter from Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Rep. Rosa DeLauro urged the USDA and the Department of Justice to consider criminal charges against Boar’s Head.

While it’s unclear if the investigation is criminal or civil, FSIS is conducting a thorough review to improve public health measures and address inspection gaps. Despite the plant closure, the investigation into other facilities will continue.
