Port workers from Maine to Texas, represented by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), are threatening to strike if a new labor agreement isn’t reached by September 30. This potential strike could impact 36 U.S. ports, which handle over half of the country’s containerized imports and exports.
The ILA, which represents around 45,000 workers, is negotiating with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) for better wages and working conditions. If the strike occurs, it would be the first East Coast dock strike since 1977, potentially causing significant disruptions to the supply chain and leading to higher prices and shortages, especially during the holiday season.
